Is 'Stack and tilt' golf swing safe?

By Steve Mcmurray of EzGolfrx

As we in North America tolerate these winter storms that keep all but the most hearty (or fool hearty)from their favorite local links, some are considering changes to their swing to improve their golf swing consistency.

Stack and tilt is being hailed as a solution to vexing golf swings.

There is no doubt that for some it may be just that. Before attempting this for yourself however, a safer approach is to have your swing analyzed by a professional not only for swing flaws but for the cause of swing flaws that are often inherent in our bodies.

As a Physical Therapist I have some reservations about stack and tilt swing style but I am withholding any final acceptance or rejection of it until I can analyze it more. I discuss it in some detail on my blog: ezgolfrx.wordpress.com

There are principles of movement in the spine that dictate the rotation of the spinal segments during side bending. It is important no matter what address is adopted that these principles be observed so as to avoid injury.

My concern with the stack and tilt is that - as I understand it - it creates a side bend toward the target leg during the back swing.

Depending on the golfer's inherent posture, this side bend may actually cause spinal segments to rotate in the opposite direction of the back swing.

This can, in turn, pass forces in unwanted places and not only reduce potential power in the swing but also set you up for an injury.

Of course this can be said of any swing style and only reinforces the need to have a thorough swing analysis by a qualified physical therapist or sports medicine specialist.

The point is that before changing any swing style,or developing your present swing, a simple "golf body screen" such as that developed by William Breland PT of Gologolf fitness is useful in identifying areas of power loss and potential injury.

Mr Breland is not only a board certified sports medicine physical therapist but also a professional golfer. As such, he brings a unique insight into the mechanics of the swing for each individual golfer.

For more information and insight on this and related topics, my free newsletter at ezgolfrx.com can help you to develop a swing equal to your desires.
